Hand Embroidered Cashmere Pashmina 'Tantra'

Hand Embroidered Cashmere Pashmina 'Tantra'

This beautiful hand-embroidered Sozni Jamawar cashmere pashmina is named Tantra, a Sanskrit word that literally translates to "loom, warp, weave" — and by extension, evokes the awakening of the true self through meditation. Derived from the root tan, meaning “to extend,” it reflects both the physical and philosophical intricacies woven into this piece. Woven in a traditional twill weave and embroidered using the Kashmiri almond motif, the colour palette is inspired by the Tibetan mandala.

The cashmere used in this shawl was sourced in June 2020 from Changthangi goats in Leh, Ladakh — a high-altitude desert in the Himalayas where winter temperatures can drop below –35°C. In response to this extreme climate, the goats develop an exceptionally fine undercoat with fibres measuring between 9 and 16 microns. These are carefully combed from the chest and underbelly during the natural moulting season, prized for their warmth, softness and insulating qualities.

The raw fibres are washed, carded and meticulously de-haired to remove coarser guard hairs, then hand-spun into an ultrafine yarn that even modern machinery cannot replicate. This yarn is woven by hand on traditional looms in Kashmir, creating a luxurious base for embroidery. The design is stitched entirely by hand in the Sozni style — a technique native to the Hazratbal valley and practised for over 500 years.

The embroidery alone took nearly 11 months to complete and was crafted by a single master artisan in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, where hand-embroidery remains a revered tradition. Threads in pink, gold, orange and green are intricately worked into the rich carmine red cashmere, resulting in a shawl that is both culturally meaningful and exquisitely refined.

Each pashmina is handled with great care and worked on by skilled individuals using traditional crafts and hand processes.

Supplied with a copy of The Kashmir Shawl book, each piece is a unique link to the landscapes and lives behind its origin and creation.
